Chris Tillman: Batting Practice Pitcher
Against the Giants tonight; 2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 K , 1 HR. Tillman's fastball was straight, averaged under 90 mph, and he left it up in the strike-zone too often. His overhand curve was good, of course, and he showed a decent change-up. Can anyone think of a right-handed pitcher with only OK (but not elite) control, with the arsenal Tillman's currently bringing to the table, that had any prolonged success in the majors? I can't off the top of my head, and right now Chris sure doesn't look like a major league pitcher to me. Tillman's walked more batters than he's struck out (8 to 7), and allowed 3 home runs in 15 IP (that's 40 per 200 innings). He's not missing bats, and hitters are making hard contact. I don't know what the solution is. I almost hope he's hurt, just so that there'd be an easy excuse to go to.
